![]() ![]() "Amnesia" lyrically explores the dishonesty of politicians and the ignorance of voters who continue to vote them into office. An accompanying music video was also released. The song also reached number one on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100, becoming the group's final US chart entry. The song was a top-10 hit in Canada and the United Kingdom, giving the group their final top-20 entries in both countries. ![]() ![]() Released on 19 January 1998, the song was met with favorable reception from critics, who regarded the song as a highlight from Tubthumper. The song's lyrics address the sense of betrayal that English leftists felt during the rise of New Labour. The sounds guide the listener to the last realm which is itself a miracle." Amnesia" is the second single from English rock band Chumbawamba's eighth studio album, Tubthumper (1997). In essence, when these meet in a "metal rapture", sound otherwise lost as soon as it's heard can be recorded and captured.Įach line of the outro seems slightly less obvious to the ideas above, but broadly it seems to convey that the sounds would die inside the listener, and hints at the sounds floating in the air, waiting for a miracle (being captured and recorded). ![]() "metal rapture" - possible reference again to master tapes which are metallic and leverage the tape's metallic properties in combination with the magnetic recording/playback heads to record and play sound. "four minutes' - is the song length, so this points to the same theory. "blinding all over the touch of your hand" might actually be "blending all over the touch of your hand", which would then seem a logical reference to operating the console's near-countless controls during the recording/mastering process. "automated bliss" - seems a possible reference to recording console level/shaping automation. "kiss the rush of me and you" - seems a possible reference to the tape and head meeting during operation, or could be more simply a reference to when sound and ear meet and the magic of the song happens. "slipping through my virtual magnet" - seems an obvious reference to master tape slipping through the magnetic heads in the tape recorders. (This is somewhat interestingly juxtaposed against a fairly peppy, upbeat tempo of the song itself. ".it's just a sound" becomes obvious, and in combination with the other adjacent lines is likely referencing the emotions that commonly accompany a sad song. I think this song contains countless references to the process/equipment required to record and playback music, and could possibly be considered a love song to the ability to capture and replay music so that it not be lost to the “Amnesia” that would occur if it were played just once and then lost forever. Pretty sure I got at least that much correct. Though…”Four minutes with you” is def due to the song length. Whatever it is, I’m pretty sure I’m wrong□ I’m terrible at interpretations, but with Anthony, it could really be anything, as we learned from the series of videos from HUWD. “Virtual magnet,” “automated bliss,” and “metal rapture” all refer to metal and/or machinery (like a car or rocket ship), but I can’t tell if the thought of machinery is a metaphor for something else. Then I shifted to a thought of a rocket ship that never successfully returns to earth…maybe barreling toward the sun (“blinding…” and “crimson love”.) Initially I thought it referred to taking a drive at night, ending with driving off a cliff. Ive been reading the lyrics for hours, trying to figure out the meaning. It has a poppy progression leading to a full on cathartic climax of a chorus much the same way “Steve McQueen” did on HUWD. While I like every song from Chapter 1, “Amnesia” hit me the hardest. ![]()
